Department History 

The Starbrick Volunteer Fire Department was formed in the fall of 1955 to provide fire protection for the village of Starbrick and the second voting district of Conewango Township with Robert Smith as Chief. In the 46 years that have followed there have been 7 other members that have held office of Chief they are Albert Toner, Jim English, Harry Rosequist, Jim Page, Bob Carberry, Mark Bupp, Tim Wiltsie and our current Chief is Kirk Foust.

 

          Starbrick’s first truck was an American La France that was purchased from the National forge co. for $300.00. After that they obtained a GMC Chassis and United Refining Co. donated a 700 Gallon tank that was mounted on the GMC Chassis and they had their first tanker. Next a 1950 hearse was purchased and converted into an emergency truck and later was replaced with bread truck that was donated by the Stroehmann bread Co.

 

In 1966 an American La France pumper was purchased from Pittsford N.Y. for $2000.00. Also in 1966 an addition was made to the rear of the truck bay and the hose tower was built.

 

In 1973 Starbrick bought is first new pumper a 1973 International diesel with a Pierce body. This was also the first diesel-powered fire engine in the area and replaced the American La France from Pittsford N.Y. A Dodge van was also purchased in 1973 to respond to EMS calls and transport personal. The Dodge van replaced the bread truck.

 

          In 1974 a social hall was added to the departments building which was then just a truck bays

         

In 1976 Starbrick purchased a Dodge mini pumper with a Pierce body to replace the aging 1963 International tanker.

 

                    In 1982 a picnic pavilion was built on the departments property on the North side of Green Ave. and in 1983 a 30ft. X 40ft. Addition was built on to the Rec. hall to house the new kitchen.

 

 In 1989 A S+S pumper on a Spartan Gladiator chassis joined the department and the Dodge van was removed from service.

 

          In 1995 a Hovertecnics hovercraft was purchased to replace the boat that was being used for water rescue at the time.

         

In 2000 a new roof was added to the building and the old house tower was torn down. A 30 X 40 extension was added to the truck bays and new-handicapped bathrooms were also built at this time.

 

           And in 2001 a 1997 Chevy Tahoe was added to the fleet as a QRS vehicle to take some of the load off of the aging 1976 Dodge mini pumper that was being used for QRS runs at the time.
